Portugal’s Greatest Forwards In History

Over the years, football lovers have witnessed quite a few numbers of fantastic and successful Portuguese forwards. This piece will read about some of these strikers and how they have helped their country.

Jose Torres

Jose Torres, popularly known as O Bom Gigante, was a Portuguese player and one of the most outstanding Portuguese forwards of all time. With 33 appearances for Portugal at various international competitions, the former Benfica player netted 14 goals.

He did not only play for Portugal but also coached the Portuguese national team.

Fernando Peyroteo

This Portuguese forward will forever be remembered for his insanely goal-scoring ability. He spent most of his football career playing for Sporting and made history as one of the club’s best strikers with the most goals.

Fernando Gomes

Portuguese legend and Porto star Gomes played 50 times for his country and scored a total of 318 goals during his time as a professional football player.

During the 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg, his final appearance for Portugal and scored the game’s only goal.

Joao Manuel Vieira Pinto

This list isn’t complete without Pinto.  He is one of the few Portuguese forwards with the most appearances.

He represented Portugal at various international competitions, including two European Championships and one FIFA World Cup, scoring 47 goals in 152 appearances.  

Cristiano Ronaldo

The 36-year-old is one of the most celebrated players of all time. The Portuguese legend recently made a surprise return to Manchester United.

He is the player with the most individual awards in football history. Not only is he the most capped Portuguese player of all time, but also the player with the most goals in football history.
