Hat-Trick Goalscorers In The History Of The Euro Championship

Dieter Muller (Yugoslavia 2-4 West Germany; 1976 semifinals)

A legendary display from Dieter Muller which will live in our memories forever. The West German scored the first-ever hat-trick of a Euro tournament back in 1976.

Muller did not even start this game. His team was trailing 1-2 against Yugoslavia when he came off the bench and equalized barely three minutes after his introduction.

Muller added two more goals to seal one of the greatest comebacks ever seen in Euro history.

Marco van Basten (England 1-3 Netherlands; 1988 Group Stage)

Unarguably one of the most influential strikers of his generation, Marco van Basten netted one of the hat-tricks in the Euro tournament history.

The Dutch, who played for AC Milan and Ajax, displayed a dominant performance as the Netherlands overcame England 3-1 at Euro 1988. Van Basten scored all three goals for the Dutch national team in that match.

They went on to win the tournament as they beat the Soviet Union 2-0 in the final where he also scored, alongside Ruud Gullit.

David Villa (Spain 4-1 Russia; 2008 Group Stage)

The former Valencia and Barcelona attacker was very instrumental in his teams’ different successes both at national and club levels.

Villa scored four goals at Euro 2008 to claim the top goalscorer spot. Three of the goals were scored in a group stage game against Russia. La Roja destroyed the Russians 4-1 in the encounter, with Villa getting his hat-trick in the space of 55 minutes. It was an all-around display that showed how brilliant the forward was.
